Unit Three Project - The Dakota Access Pipeline

In the last three hours the Army Corp of Engineers has shifted the nature the Dakota Access Pipeline debate by not granting an easement to drill under the Missouri River directly North of the Standing Rock Sioux's reservation.  Still, even if there weren't the possibility for policy reversals with the changing of the president, the Dakota Access pipeline would stay in the news.  They are pumping oil in the Bakken range in North Dakota at historic rates, the dangers of moving the oil by train are significant, and the Energy Transfer Company has invested millions in a pipeline that has been mostly completed.  The tribes have won a victory but the story of the pipeline is not over.

Follow the link below to an in-class assignment to build background knowledge about the conflict, and a writing assignment due next that asks you to form your opinion about the pipeline.

As this story is quickly changing, it's possible that we will add new possibilities to the assignment, but this basic assignment should remain despite the evolving story.

Here are additional resources to consider.
